Turvey stood from his seat. He winced at the sudden arrival of four large spotlights that illuminated him and followed him to the centre stage. He felt the weight of the handgun he’d pulled from the underside of the top table and stashed in his inside pocket. It felt heavy, heavier than any gun he’d carried before. It wasn’t until he laid eyes on the first camera that his public speaking experience kicked in, and he straightened, suddenly aware of his posture.

He stepped up to the lectern, and the room slowly fell silent in anticipation of his speech. He heard the individual claps gradually stop, and could place the last clapping person beyond the bright lights. There was no escape now.

Turvey took a deep breath.

“When DWC was formed, I wasn’t even born,” he began. “In that first year, I think I’m right in saying that the equivalent value of the donation was a mere five thousand dollars, which, in those times, was a grand sum of money. But resources were low and medical research was technologically limited compared to the wonders we can achieve in today’s world. That’s evolution, some say, it’s a natural progression. But I beg to differ. Let’s consider the natural progression of the human race. Learning to walk, for instance, took us millions of years. Learning to communicate, again, took us millions of years. The difference between five thousand dollars and five hundred million dollars in only forty-five years cannot be disregarded as a natural progression.”

The audience murmured, and Turvey, a practised public speaker, allowed them the chance. He knew it would add to the impact of what he was about to say.

“Forty-five years ago, one percent of the world’s population was richer than the rest of the world. And guess what? That hasn’t changed. We’re not all wealthier. The population has grown exponentially in forty-five years, but that ninety-nine percent of the remaining wealth has just been diluted.”

The audience was intrigued by the direction of his speech. Turvey spoke well. He was clear and had the nuances of a leader who guided people’s imaginations.

“So if it’s not a natural progression that can spark such a rise in generosity, then what is it? Do you know what I think, ladies and gentlemen in this room, and all the incredible people out there that have donated tonight to help save these poor people from a life of misery and pain?” He paused once more.

“I think it’s desire.”

Three hundred people sat at the tables in the room, and another hundred people stood around the edge as security, cameramen, media reporters and events crew. Not one person made a sound.

“Forget about natural progression, I want you to visualise something new. Desire. Visualise a job you once wanted. It was a job you had wanted for a long time, a great step in your long career, whatever that may be. How many other people went for that job? Ten? Twenty? Fifty? Heck, with today's internet recruitment channels, some companies see thousands of people applying for a single job.
